ABOUT THE WORKSHOP
The stepcousin of the more glamorous arterial counterpart, vein disorders are ten times more prevalent than arterial pathology, and millions (10-15%) of Americans suffer from them. Due to the traditional neglect on the part of the surgical establishment, the created void was filled with misconceptions forwarded by dishonest practitioners guided by greed, ego or both cheating scores of naive consumers of medical goods.
After recapitulating the anatomy, physiology and pathophysiology of the venous systems, the workshop, held in a private office setting, will focus on the clinical as well as the non invasive evaluation (on patients) of the direction of flow, source and extent of reflux (c.w. Doppler US), quantitative assessment of reflux and calf pump functions (APG) and duplex imaging of the superficial venous systems. The workshop will also discuss the history of sclerotherapy, the technique(s), the materials needed, the methods used, and the possible adverse reactions to the sclerosing solutions.Performed under loco-regional anesthesia (femoral block) the minimally invasive surgery for primary varicose veins by invaginated stripping (PIN stripping of Oesch) and ambulatory phlebectomy (stab avulsion by hook phlebextraction) via the Muller, Oesch and Varady hooks will be demonstrated with utmost details. Microsclerosis for telangiectasia, will be demonstrated on patients. CVI will be discussed in general guidelines with emphasis on conservative management (elastic versus non elastic - i.e.Circ-Aid legging - compression) and on the novel endoscopic perforator ligation and paratibial fasciotomy. The business aspect, correct ICD-9CM and CPT codes and fee charts, are discussed in a special session. The Practitioner's Guide (see enclosed Table of contents), patients' educational brochures on varicose and spider veins, and miscellaneous file and billing forms, will be given to each participant as well.
